(From SDRG) "An alternative to typical below-grade foundations is to insulate the ground from the colder outdoor temperatures to prevent frost heave, minimizing the need for a deep foundation. This reduces excavation requirements, concrete use, and offers the cost savings associated with slab-on-grade construction." The National Association of Home Builders has developed a set of guidelines for frost-protected shallow foundations which differ for heated and unheated spaces.
